Your work as an actor and director has been praised many a times. Why do you think you haven’t got the big leap?
I am so glad you have asked me this question. I have continuously asked myself this question and I come up with no clear justification or reason that I haven’t been able to make the big leap. I guess I can narrow my lack of big success down to two main reasons. Firstly, I am not part of any groups or factions and secondly as you rightly put it, I have no godfather. I am a complete outsider but I believe that if you are talented, success is always round the corner. My time will come. I am happy that the audiences haven’t got bored of watching me.
Tell us about why you chose to do a thriller like Apartment?
Apartment just fell into my lap. I had been in touch with Jagmohan Mundhra as I wanted to portray Sanjay Gandhi in a film he was directing based on the Gandhi family. That didn’t happen but he called me for this one which was a romantic thriller. It seemed like a nice simple story and I must say it has turned out much better than I envisaged.
You last directed a short film in Dus Kahaniyaan which had veterans like Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. Why are you shying from getting behind the camera again?
I have a very lucid answer to this. I am in the process of finalising my script for my first directorial full length feature which should go on the floors August/Sept. It is a love story with a difference. It will be produced by Balaji Telefilms. I am also working on an action comedy for my friend Sanjay Gupta who is responsible for all my successes in recent times, be it acting or directing.
You also became quite a successful host on TV. Another stint at that?
Of course. I love hosting and that is an extension of me as an actor. Television audiences have appreciated me in my role as a host on several shows. So I will continue hosting shows as and when time permits. I actually feel relaxed while hosting shows and it is like a catharsis of sorts. I just be myself and have a ball but it will be third in the list of priorities as this year is only going to be about my directorial debut but if someone wants to revive Kaun Banega Crorepati, I am game!
