Rohit Roy’s a talented actor, but in terms of acting his best is yet to come.

He has done some interesting roles in recent times, but there’s lot more to do. Unlike other actors who just wait hoping for the right role to come their way, Rohit decided to be pro-active.

The past couple of years have seen him branch out in a big way, producing, directing, acting and anchoring, and he’s enjoying every bit of it. Along with wife Manasi he has set up a production house that produces TV shows and films. Rohit’s company has tied up with Zoom to make ten one-hour long movies. “It’s innovative. It’s a lead into the future, something that’s never happened in India before,” says Rohit.

“Times are changing. Earlier a movie lasted three hours, then it reduced to two-and-a-half hours, then two and now people are looking for something even shorter.”

His movies may be short in duration, but each has a strong story and is character-driven, he adds. “They are all commercial films, some thrillers, some romantic comedies, one horror comedy. We are adopting the HD format, it’s very futuristic like a lot of Hollywood movies that have been made. We are trying to get the best actors. When you can’t give an actor too much money then give him that great role,” he smiles.

Production is not something Rohit enjoys much, but direction is surely his interest. In fact he got some rave reviews for the story Rice Plate he directed in Dus Kahaniyaan featuring Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. “It was an amazing experience working with them. They were easier than most actors I have worked with. Now for every film, I always think of Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi first.”

He was destined to turn director, says Rohit. “In fact it was years ago when I was doing the serial Swabhimaan that a very senior camerman Pravin Bhatt told me that I’d direct one day,” he reveals.

Rohit’s now directing a film for Sanjay Gupta apart from another movie where he will launch himself with two heroines. “Why not? With Farhan Akhtar becoming an actor I have renewed confidence. I don’t think I’ve got enough till now to satisfy me as an actor. Yes, there was Shootout… and now Mittal Vs Mittal and Alibaug , but I’m looking for more.” In his film, a risque thriller, Rohit plays a swimming coach and he’s working hard on his look, not to miss the physique he’s recently developed.

Films apart, the TV show Inside Bollywood that he anchors on Zoom also gives him a sense of fulfilment. “I’ve got a great response from within the industry which was very important to me because I’m not just another host, but a part of the fraternity.”
